Puzzle Piece Program
Imagine for a moment that you are a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast and you have just about completed a 5,000 piece puzzle only to discover that several key pieces are missing. How would this make you feel? It might depend on whether it was possible to find the misplaced pieces, or in fact they had been permanently lost. Now imagine that these pieces were actually parts of your life that you needed to function as a thriving adult. Unfortunately, this is the case of the children we are looking to serve. Children, who for example are in foster care, have incarcerated parents, or terminally ill parents, sometimes lack or lose the life skills they need to complete the puzzle of their identity. It is up to us as a caring community to help find or replace the missing puzzle pieces so that these youth can get on with their lives and become the well-balanced adults they deserve to be. |

How it came to be
The need for the Puzzle Piece Program was discovered through
our personal experiences as therapeutic foster parents. It
didn't' take long to realize that academia was not the only area
of help that these unique children so desperately needed.
Sometimes even basic skills like nutrition, hygiene, money
management, fitness, etc, were not present. So the search
began for an adequate source that offered not only compassion
but also "life" education. We found many existing programs
unsatisfactory. Mentoring programs offered little more than a
"friendship/buddy" instead of an organized system to establish
and reach life-altering goals. Over time, the need to establish
an organization in order to increase a young adult's
future quality of life took precedent. |
